Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit (GTX)-D Line Revival Plan Announced: Direct Route to Gangnam and Impact on Gimpo Citizens

The Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit (GTX)-D line, which was reduced to connecting only to Bucheon and which caused severe opposition from Gimpo citizens, will be revived.

According to Gyeongin Ilbo’s coverage on the 7th, the government plans to confirm and announce the new GTX-D·E·F plan as early as this month. Among these, it is known that GTX-D will be the first to be promoted as a new direct route to Gangnam, which citizens have longed for.

On the 22nd of last month, Baek Won-guk, Second Vice Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, said at the opening ceremony of the GTX Promotion Center at Suseo Station in Seoul, “The plan to extend the GTX-A, B, C and build a new D, E, F is almost complete and is expected to be announced soon.” revealed.

Kim Bo-hyeon, a senior administrative officer in the former presidential office who was in charge of the president’s final approval until the end of last year, said in a recent interview with the Kyungin Ilbo, “GTX-D, which runs from Gimpo to Geomdan and Bucheon to Sadang, Gangnam, Hanam, and Paldang, is expected to be announced soon. “He supported this.

GTX-D is reflected in the 4th National Railway Network Construction Plan for 2021 to be built only from Gimpo Janggi to Incheon Geomdan to Bucheon Sports Complex, and has been commonly known as ‘GTX Kimbu Line’ among Gimpo citizens.

At the time of the line reduction, strong-arm protests, including candlelight protests and head-shaving protests, took place in the Gimpo area, and the government announced again that it would pursue a plan to connect the Gimbu Line directly to Yongsan using the GTX-B line from Bucheon.

If the government confirms the GTX-D as is, it is expected that the convenience of commuting to and from work in the Gangnam area of Seoul will be greatly improved for residents in the western part of the metropolitan area. Until now, to move to Gangnam, Gimpo citizens had to take the Gimpo Gold Line, a two-car light rail, and transfer to Line 9 at Gimpo Airport Station.

The Yongsan direct connection plan using the GTX-B line is automatically scrapped. In this case, you can access Sindorim, Yongsan, and Seoul stations by simply taking the GTX-D and transferring to Line B in Bucheon.

A political official said, “The Kimbu Line direct line to Yongsan would have been at a disadvantage in terms of dispatch intervals compared to the GTX-B, the original owner of the line.”

Meanwhile, among the routes likely to be newly built, GTX-E is expected to connect Incheon Geomam with Kwangwoon University in Seoul and Deokso in Namyangju, while GTX-F is expected to connect Goyang Daegok with Suwon, Hanam, and Uijeongbu like a circular line.
