Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon announced today (23rd) that he will implement the Seoul Transportation Corporation’s workforce reduction plan without a hitch during the National Assembly’s Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee’s inspection of Seoul City government.
Previously, the union of the Seoul Transportation Corporation, which operates Seoul Subway Lines 1 to 8, demanded a withdrawal of the company’s workforce reduction plan and announced a general strike on the 9th of next month.
First, Mayor Oh explained, “The workforce increased in 2018 as 1,632 people, including office workers, were transferred to the quota, and a manpower shortage occurred as the work pattern was changed from 3 groups and 2 shifts to 4 groups and 2 shifts.”
He added, “Considering concerns such as increased crime in the subway, it is necessary to expand safety personnel so that citizens can feel it,” and added, “We will supplement work patterns by operating personnel flexibly and efficiently by time zone.”
However, Mayor Oh emphasized, “Separately from this, we will implement the management rationalization plan to reduce the workforce by 2,212 people by 2026 without a hitch.”
In addition, regarding the behavior of construction union executives who were absent from work (non-compliance with time-off) revealed through a recent audit, he said, “We plan to fully investigate 311 time-off users, discipline them for poor service, and recover illegally received wages.”
