Jangchung Gymnasium designated as Seoul’s future heritage in February

Seoul Future Heritage is a cultural heritage of modern and contemporary Seoul with memories and emotions that can be shared by many citizens. Starting in 2013, a total of 488 future heritage sites have been designated, and Jangchung Gymnasium was designated as Seoul’s future heritage site in February.

Jangchung Gymnasium is the first indoor gym in Korea and is a living witness to the history of indoor sports, having hosted indoor games such as basketball, volleyball, wrestling, and boxing in the 1970s and 1980s, as well as games such as judo and taekwondo at the 1988 Olympics. In addition, the gym played a role as the mother of indoor sports along with historical events such as the election of a president, a professional wrestling match, the birth of Korea’s first professional boxing world champion, and amateur basketball. Because of this, it has great value as a place that holds one of the memories of the people of Korea.

Jangchung Gymnasium opened in February 1963 and was remodeled in 2015 to what it is today. I vividly remember having fun watching Korea’s largest men’s and women’s adult basketball tournament at the Jangchung Gymnasium with my high school classmates at a time when there was no professional basketball. It’s been a while since I visited Jangchung Gymnasium, and I was very disappointed that the game continued without spectators. Instead, I looked around the nearby historical places Jangchungdan Park and Supyogyo Bridge. This is a place I often came to on picnics when I was in elementary school, and I remember eating a packed lunch on the side of the dusty playground.

Places that can be shared become memories and the subject of stories that communicate emotions. Seoul Future Heritage brings out precious memories of citizens. Future Heritage website (
