The city of Seoul and the construction industry have joined hands to ensure that the names of apartments in Seoul, which are criticized for being full of ‘alien words’, are simple and easy to understand. For newly built apartments, guidelines are also distributed to avoid using difficult and long names such as ‘Sinnae Station Geumgang Penterium Central Park’ and ‘Raemian Gaeforuchheim’.
The city of Seoul announced on the 18th that it would hold a ‘declaration ceremony to establish a beautiful and easy-to-name apartment complex name’ with about 10 public and private construction companies on the 21st. Large construction companies that play a leading role in naming apartments will participate in self-cleaning efforts. Samsung C&T of ‘Raemian’ and Hyundai Engineering & Construction and Hyundai Engineering of ‘Hillstate’ are participating.
At this meeting, the city of Seoul establishes the final guidelines for apartment names. It is said to have been prepared after receiving opinions from experts, housing associations, and construction companies since December of last year. The final guidelines are scheduled to be distributed to each district office, housing association, and construction company early next year. An official from the Seoul Metropolitan Government said, “Considering the autonomy in naming apartments, we have prepared recommended-level guidelines and a voluntary declaration by the industry.”
According to the guidelines, new apartment names are recommended to have a maximum of 10 characters. Long characters that are difficult to sing or memorize are inconvenient in real life.
Place names in apartment names must be written according to the legal and administrative districts. For example, using ‘Mok-dong’ in the name of an apartment in Shinwol-dong, Yangcheon-gu, Seoul would violate the guidelines. However, like ‘Seoul Forest’, local landmarks are not place names, so there is no problem with using them in nearby apartments.
Avoid using indiscriminate ‘pet names’. A ‘pet name’ is a word added before or after the brand name to emphasize the characteristics of an apartment. It is considered one of the reasons why apartment names have become difficult and complicated. If there is a park or forest nearby, it is given ‘Park’ or ‘Foret’, if there is a street with more than 4 lanes nearby, it is given Central, and if it has an expensive interior, it is given ‘The First, Best, Noble’, etc.
Han Byeong-yong, head of the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s Housing Policy Department, said, “Autonomy and diversity in apartment names must be respected, but efforts are also needed to include beautiful Korean words and place names rather than difficult and long foreign words or foreign words.” He added, “We will move forward with an improvement plan that includes over a year of consideration and discussion.” “I hope that beautiful and easy-to-speak names for apartment complexes will be actively created,” he said.
