[이트레블뉴스=박소영 기자] Seogwipo City has prepared a plan to operate the Seogwipo Astronomical Science and Culture Center in 2024 to provide Jeju residents and tourists with opportunities to experience astronomy and space science, and to foster future scientific talent. Operates constellation observation programs by season and theme / Develops and operates useful astronomy education programs related to school curriculum / Operates safe and convenient viewing environment and facilities / Holds the 2024 Seogwipo Astronomy, Science and Culture Festival.
Major annual astronomical observation programs are scheduled for nebula and star cluster observation in January, Canopus observation in February and March, observation of Gyeonwoo Jignyeo Star in August, Saturn observation in September and October, and Jupiter observation in November. Astronomy-related observations for students are also scheduled. Specialized training includes a starlight experience class from March to November, a vacation astronomy class from July to August, a meeting with an astronomer in which the whole family can participate from April to August, and moon photography education using smartphones in May, targeting educational institutions and groups. Astronomy career education is also planned.
To this end, the aging observation room and indoor and outdoor facilities were replaced and improved from August 2022 to July 2023. The size of the aperture of the main observatory astronomical telescope was increased from 16 inches (400 mm) to 24 inches (610 mm) to improve observation performance. At the same time, a voice recognition system was introduced to the main telescope, allowing the telescope to be operated by voice and track celestial objects. .
If you participate in the constellation observation program, you can observe beautiful celestial objects in the night sky through the newly introduced main telescope ‘Halla’. The Seogwipo Astronomy, Science and Culture Museum named the main telescope ‘Halla’. Seogwipo Astronomy, Science and Culture Museum is located in the middle of Hallasan Mountain, and the meaning of Hallasan (漢拏) is ‘pulling the Milky Way.’
In addition, we changed the environment to a barrier-free environment for the vulnerable by installing ramps so that infant cars and wheelchairs can use them. The interior of the facility was designed to resemble space, and a photo zone was created at the main entrance with the star of disease-free longevity, Canopus, in the background, which can only be observed at the Seogwipo Astronomy, Science and Culture Museum.
The Seogwipo Science and Culture Festival, which has been held since 2006, is scheduled to be held this September. Last year, a record-high number of 1,200 people participated to pursue scientific curiosity, and local students participated and operated science experience booths. To participate in various programs and events, you must make a reservation at the Seogwipo Astronomy, Science and Culture Museum. 064-739-9701~2
