It has been 18 years since Yuna Kim (retired) in 2006 that both male and female athletes have won this competition. Korean men’s singles star Cha Jun-hwan (Korea University) did not win a medal at the Junior World Championships.

Min-gyu Seo, who started skating to the original soundtrack of the free skating program Notre Dame de Paris, neatly performed his first jump task, a triple axel-double toe loop combination jump, earning a base score of 9.30 points and a performance score (GOE) of 1.37 points. The triple axel solo jump was disappointing as the jump was shaky and was treated as a single jump in the first round, but it did not waver. He calmly completed the triple loop cleanly.

Seo Min-gyu, who caught his breath by performing the Flying Camel Spin at level 4, improved the perfection of his acting with a quick change foot combination spin (level 4) following the Coreo sequence. He also handled the triple flip-triple toe loop combination jump without wavering.

The acting in the second half, which was worth 10% extra points, wasn’t bad either. After performing the triple lutz flawlessly, she calmly performed the triple flip-double axel-double axel sequence jump. Seo Min-gyu, who completed the final jump, the triple salchow, without any deductions, finished his performance by performing the change foot sit spin at level 4. Seo Min-gyu, who confirmed his first place score in Kiss and Cry Zone, jumped up and clenched his fists to express the joy of his victory.

Jae-Geun Lee (Suri High School), who also competed, ranked 6th with a total score of 212.22 points. In the ice dance free dance held on the same day, the team of Ji-ni Kim and Namu Lee (Gyeonggi Provincial Skating Federation) ranked 16th with a total score of 134.43 points.

Seo Min-gyu said through his management company All That Sports, “Winning a gold medal in my first World Junior Championships still feels like a dream and I am so happy that I can’t express it in words.” He added, “It was unfortunate that I made one mistake in the free skating, but I am working on each and every task ahead. “I tried to focus and performed perfectly, so it was a satisfying game,” he said.

He smiled and said, “I’m really happy that I was able to take first place. I’m really grateful to those who always supported me and came all the way to Taiwan to support me.”
