The prodigal son
The Justice Department has been watching Biden Jr. for a long time. And this cannot be explained only by inter-party struggle. Republicans, for example, are confident that, on the whole, this department is acting in the interests of the Democratic Party.
In fact, little can hurt 53-year-old Hunter Biden’s image. His reputation couldn’t be worse. In his autobiography, Beautiful Things, published two years ago, he detailed his struggles with drug addiction and alcoholism. In 2019, a worker at a computer workshop presented his laptop to the FBI and everyone saw pictures of drugs, prostitutes and guns. The authenticity of the materials from the hard disk has been repeatedly confirmed, now no one disputes it.
In September, Hunter was charged with evading $100,000 in taxes and illegally purchasing weapons. He allegedly made a deal with the investigation and the case was dropped. But a Delaware judge declared the preliminary agreement illegal and overturned it. And Hunter became the first son of a sitting head of state in US history to be prosecuted.
Now the stakes are even higher: 1.4 million in unpaid taxes. In addition, filing a false declaration is a separate offense – and a very serious one at that. As a result, Hunter faces up to 17 years in prison.
What does Sleepy Joe have to do with it?
Biden Sr. (Sleepy Joe, as he is called after Donald Trump’s idea) is suspected of aiding his son’s machinations. In particular, Hunter was on the board of directors of the Ukrainian oil and gas company Burisma, he was paid great money for no reason. And his father, who was not yet at the head of the state, at that time actively cooperated with Kiev – again for oil and gas.
Republicans allege that the Biden family acted in concert, receiving funds through shell companies not only from Ukraine but also from China. Given the confrontation between Washington and Beijing, this is already a red line for the American political establishment.
The documents of the Ministry of Justice also contain the same data. As specified by the department, from 2016 to 2020, more than seven million dollars were transferred to Hunter for his “work” at Burisma and participation in a certain Chinese investment fund. And it is precisely on this questionably acquired money that he also does not pay taxes. It should be noted that an investigation into this matter was opened back in 2018.
The White House demonstratively distanced itself from the scandal surrounding Biden Jr., repeating from time to time: there is no evidence of the president’s involvement in his son’s financial activities. Sleepy Joe has repeatedly pointed out: The Department of Justice is completely independent in its investigations. Republicans continue to insist that the head of state not only knew about his son’s operations, but participated in them, benefiting from them. That means he should be removed from office.
Early from the White House
However, Joe Biden plans to run next year. The Democratic Party appears to have no other contenders. And this is an extremely vulnerable strategy.
At the end of the week, the “elephants”, along with the accusations of the Department of Justice, presented a resolution for the possible removal of Biden from power. The congressmen intend to find out “whether there are sufficient grounds for the House of Representatives to exercise the constitutional right of impeachment.” Speaker Mike Johnson stressed that Republicans have a strong case for impeaching the president. The decision should be considered in the coming days.
And the Justice Department’s charges against Biden Jr. are very helpful. Previous impeachment talks were too vague. For example, they suggested admitting that the president had failed the border policy. Even the staunchest Republicans noted at the time that this was not very convincing. Now the “elephants” have every chance to achieve their goal and prevent Sleepy Joe from entering the White House for a second term.
