Shigella causes the infectious gastrointestinal disease shigellosis. Symptoms include frequent severe diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. The bacterium spreads through faeces, but it is also a sexually transmitted bacterium, says Boris Cruyssaert of Sensoa.
“It is a previously unknown, sexually transmitted disease that is mainly transmitted through anal sexual contact. Men who have sex with men are especially at risk. The bacterium is generally not very common, but there is currently a sudden upsurge in our country,” says Cruyssaert.
