28.09.24 – It’s been a year for Maximilian Jäger from Bad Brückenau: a few days ago the experience of the Paralympics in Paris – and now the crowning glory of the World Championships in Zurich. The 24-year-old para-cyclist became runner-up in the road race on Friday. The spa town of Bad Brückenau couldn’t have a more suitable or better ambassador.

Last year he became world champion in the individual time trial, but he has now also demonstrated his international class on the road. Three days after he finished seventh on the flat and board course of the individual battle against the clock.

The road race was more mountainous and the nature of the route suited Maximilian better. “I’m 65.2 kilograms and the mountainous routes are just more suitable for me,” he said. For comparison: heavier athletes with more body weight and more muscle mass have advantages on flat routes.

A brutally fast route – super satisfied

To Maximilian’s crowning competition on Friday. One lap was 5.6 kilometers long. It had to be driven five times – the result was 31.2 kilometers. It started at Sechsläutenplatz on Lake Zurich. “It was a very tough race,” notes the 24-year-old, “a street circuit with a mountain in it.” On lap three, Maximilian tried to drive away, but that didn’t really work. But then he gave it his all again. For insiders: The man from Bad Brückenau drove a 35cc average speed, “brutally fast,” as he emphasized himself. “I’m super satisfied,” he summed up perfectly – and that’s the most important thing.

This Saturday he’s taking the plane from Zurich back to Berlin at 5:30 p.m. and at 8:30 p.m. he’ll be back at his current home in Cottbus. This saves time and allows him to regenerate more than having to travel back by car. Because on Monday he starts his job – with his practice partner. Maximilian is completing a dual degree in applied sports science. Its specification is not surprising: competitive and competitive sports. (wk)

The World Championships were his last competitions of the season. “Now it’s time for a well-deserved break,” he says. Osthessen|News also wishes him the same. +++
