The administration of both doses of the Pfizer vaccine reduced 98% of deaths in nursing homes in Catalonia and 97% of hospitalizations. This shows a study by the Regional Government of Catalonia, researchers from the University of Oxford and the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
The study, published in the authoritative scientific journal The Lancet, is the world’s first for the clinical efficacy of the Pfizer vaccine in nursing homes and was signed by Daniel Prieto-Alhambra, a professor at the Center for Medical Statistics at Oxford University.
For two months, 28,594 ages of people living in nursing homes, 26,238 employees in them and 61,951 health workers were studied. The main conclusion is that the effect of the Pfizer vaccine has led to a decrease in infection rates by 92% among staff and 88% among the elderly, BNR said.
The study cites other studies with similar results – one conducted in Scotland on the general population, with a reduced risk of infection between 85 and 94%, and another from England on hospital staff, showing a 72% reduction in infections with just one dose of the vaccine.
On this occasion, Professor Daniel Prieto-Alhambra said that these were “spectacular results” that “should reassure the public about the main benefits of the ongoing vaccination campaign in Spain and around the world.”
