Sensational discovery in human blood

Dutch scientists have discovered microplastics in human blood for the first time, the local electronic publication NRC reported. The study is by experts from the Free University of Amsterdam.

The study involved 22 anonymous volunteers. The blood taken from them was tested for the presence of several types of plastics, using special technologies created for this purpose.

Microplastic was found in the blood of three-quarters of participants, and it is in very small quantities – an average of 1.6 micrograms per milliliter, scientists say.

Most of them have the presence of PET plastic, which is often used in the manufacture of bottles and food packaging.

The publication notes that it is not clear whether the presence of plastic particles in the blood is harmful. Experts emphasize that it is extremely important to make additional analyzes.

The data from the study are published in the specialized edition “Environmental International”.
