Sensation makes comeback with ‘old style’ dance party in Arena

Sensation, one of the largest dance parties on Dutch soil, is back after five years in the Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam. The party is sold out: with almost 40,000 expected visitors, Sensation seems to be a hit again.

The theme of the returning party is ‘YES’ according to organizer ID&T Group. A reference to the freedom that revelers have again after the pandemic, says ID&T Events director Milan Raven.

“To celebrate that positivity always wins, but also to show how the dance floor has always been the place where you can be yourself and let everything go. People need the warmth, intimacy and sense of togetherness that belong to house music.”

This is what the last edition of Sensation White in 2017 looked like:

There are performances by DJs such as Diplo, Acraze, Oliver Heldens and the duo Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano. The emphasis is mainly on house music. Later editions of the event emphasized trance.

End of ‘old’ Sensation

The waning popularity of electronic dance music was one of the reasons why Sensation in the Arena was parted ways in 2017. A violent incident also put the party in a bad light. In 2012 at Sensation White businessman Koen Everink seriously mistreated by kick boxer Badr Hari.

According to the organizers, the main reason for stopping was that the Netherlands was ready for something new in the dance field. That is why the organization was working on a new concept in the Arena. That new event was supposed to be launched during Beyond Sensation in 2020, but that didn’t get off the ground due to the pandemic.

The new concept was put on hold; today there is a ‘regular’ edition of Sensation. “Well in a new jacket,” says Raven. “We’re going to celebrate life again tonight, that’s our mission.”

New audience

The latest edition of Sensation isn’t so much intended as a reunion, Raven explains. Adding new artists to the line-up is specifically aimed at a younger and new audience. “But there are also DJs who came to previous editions, especially for the former visitors. Everyone is of course welcome.”

In the past, the dance party was characterized by the white clothing of visitors, large illuminated sets and laser shows. There’s no shortage of that tonight, says Raven.

The new concept may be launched at a later date. Raven cannot yet say what that will look like and in which year it can be visited.

It is the 19th time that Sensation is held in the Netherlands. In total, 135 editions have been given all over the world.
