Donald Trump has said he has “guaranteed” plans to end the deadly war in Ukraine, but will only reveal them if he wins the US presidential election in November. The former US president and current Republican candidate is in a neck-and-neck race with his Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris.
“If I win, as president-elect, I will have a done deal, guaranteed. This is a war that shouldn’t have happened,” Trump said on Lex Friedman’s podcast Tuesday. “I have a very precise plan on how to stop Ukraine and Russia, AND I have a definite idea – maybe not a plan, but an idea – about China,” he added.
“But I can’t give you these plans because if I give you these plans I won’t be able to use them and they will be very unsuccessful. You know, part of it is the surprise, right?”
The comments echo what Trump-loyal members of Congress did earlier this year, when they scuttled a bipartisan immigration plan, allegedly because they didn’t want the Biden-Harris administration to gain credibility on one of the biggest issues in the 2024 election. .
Trump has faced criticism for repeatedly praising Russian President Vladimir Putin. In the podcast, he said the crisis in Ukraine could escalate into “World War III” and that several global hotspots are boiling over because “America has no leadership.”
For her part, Harris has spoken out against Trump’s public praise of Putin, telling the Democratic National Convention last month that “I will not bow to tyrants and dictators” and that as president she would “stand firmly on the side of Ukraine.”
