Moers. For people who would have nothing else

Actually, it would have been standing in a hut at the Christmas market: the wish tree for seniors who would otherwise have no present on Christmas Eve. “There are many elderly people in our city who have no relatives, are often alone and cannot afford much,” says Julia Voth, who started the wishing tree campaign for seniors two years ago. With the support of their mother Birgit Sepic and Moers Marketing GmbH, around 120 senior citizens were able to look forward to a gift or time together in the past two years. “Because a visit, a walk together or a reading hour are great gifts,” says Sabine Opgen-Rhein from Moers Marketing.

When the Christmas market had to be canceled due to the corona, the Sparkasse on the Lower Rhine spontaneously offered to set up the dream tree in its main office on the Ostring. Until Friday, December 18, customers and visitors who want to give something to people who are not doing so well can take a wish list there and put a wrapped present under the tree. Julia Voth: “On December 21st and 22nd, the presents can be picked up from us by those who wish to receive them. If that doesn’t work, we will find a solution.”

Blank wish cards are still available until December 18th at the Sparkasse or the Moers Marketing office on Kirchstrasse. “Neighbors and acquaintances who know about people who live alone and may not get a present can fill out a card and hang it on the tree,” says Birgit Sepic. She accompanies the campaign for the entire two weeks in the Sparkasse. “We are very happy to support this impressive, voluntary commitment to senior citizens,” said Giovanni Malaponti, Chairman of the Management Board of the Sparkasse.
