Rheurdt More and more seniors are falling victim to WhatsApp scammers – like an 80-year-old man from Rheurdt. The police expressly warns of this scam and gives tips on how seniors can protect themselves.
A man from Rheurdt fell for a scammer. On Tuesday (August 2), the 80-year-old received a WhatsApp message from someone posing as his son around 8 a.m. The person who wrote the message pretended that his cell phone was defective and that he therefore had a new cell phone number. The alleged son finally asked the 80-year-old to transfer an amount of money in order to be able to transfer urgent bills. The Rheurdter fell for the scam and transferred the money. He later discovered that the messages were not from his son. The police expressly warn of this scam: “If you are contacted by a person you know on an unknown number, do not save the number automatically. Ask the person you know on the old number.” You should always be suspicious of requests for money transfers via Whatsapp and other messenger services. If money has already been transferred, those affected should contact their bank immediately and report it to the local police station.
