Mohammad Dawood Muzammil was governor of northern Balkh province. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed his death on Thursday Twitter.
The governor died in an explosion in his office. Another person was also killed and several others were injured, writes BBC according to a police spokesperson. It is unknown who is behind the explosion.
Muzammil led the fight against IS militants when he was governor of eastern Nangarhar province. Last October he moved to Balkh.
Since the Taliban took power in Afghanistan, several people associated with the organization have been killed in attacks. Many of them have been claimed by IS. The attack on Muzammil has not yet been claimed.
Last year, the Taliban restricted women’s rights in Afghanistan. The organization declared last December, among other things, that universities are off limits to women and that they are no longer allowed to work for NGOs.
Ministers of twelve countries, including the Netherlands, urged the Taliban to reverse that decision.
