The Senegal U-17 national team beat Argentina 2-1 in the first match of Group D 2023 U-17 World Cup at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium, Bandung, Saturday (11/11).
Senegal U-17 took a 2-0 lead over Argentina in the first half. Amara Diouf scored Senegal’s two goals in the sixth and 38th minutes.
Trailing 0-2 in the first half made Argentina increase their attacks at the start of the second half. In the 55th minute, Argentina U-17 had a golden opportunity.
In the 54th minute Maher Carrizo’s shot was blocked by the Senegal defense. Carrizo still managed to get the ball, who immediately shot at the second opportunity. However, Carrizo’s second kick was caught by goalkeeper Serigne Diouf.
One minute later, Agustin Ruberto’s shot went off the mark on the left side of the opponent’s goal. Amara Diouf almost scored a hat trick if her right footed shot in the 57th minute did not go wide on the left side of Team Tango’s goal.
Declining physical condition and trailing 0-2 made the Argentine players careless in defense. In the 78th minute Amara Diouf escaped the offside penalty. However, Diouf’s right foot shot when facing goalkeeper Diaz went wide on the right side.
Goddess Fortuna doesn’t seem to be on Argentina U-17’s side in this match. Entering the final minutes, La Albiceleste had a chance to score a goal through Franco Mastantuono’s left foot kick in the 82nd minute, but Diouf was able to thwart it.
One minute later it was Carrizo’s turn to header from a sideways corner kick on the right side of the opponent’s goal.
Argentina’s continuous efforts paid off in the injury time. With a right-footed free kick from outside the penalty box, Ruberto reduced Argentina’s deficit to 1-2 in the 90+2 minute.
Goalkeeper Diouf made a blunder after failing to catch Ruberto’s shot at the near post or right post of Senegal’s goal.
Goalkeeper Diaz made another important save in the final minutes of the game. Argentina’s goal was saved from conceding Senegal’s third goal. In the end, Senegal U-17 won 2-1 over Argentina.
This defeat to Senegal could make Argentina U-17’s steps in the 2023 U-17 World Cup even more difficult. Moreover, in the second match, Argentina will face Japan U-17, who won 1-0 over Poland.
