Senegal: The Constitutional Council dismisses Macky Sall Senegal: The Constitutional Council dismisses Macky Sall

Libreville, Friday February 16, 2024 (Infos Gabon) – The country’s highest court yesterday canceled the postponement to December 15, 2024 of the presidential election initially scheduled for February 25.

In its verdict delivered yesterday, the Constitutional Council decided on the decision of the Senegalese president to postpone the presidential election initially scheduled for February 25, 2024. On February 3 in a televised message to the Nation, Macky Sall announced the postponement of this election while the election campaign was supposed to start at midnight. Two days later, some of the deputies voted in favor of postponing this election until December 15, 2024 during a particularly tense plenary session.

But around forty political groups and Senegalese civil society organizations have contacted the Constitutional Council to request the annulment of this law. During its hearing yesterday, the country’s highest court granted these requests, considering that this postponement was contrary to the Constitution as well as the principle of “legal certainty and stability of institutions”.

The college of seven sages also emphasizes that “the date of the election cannot be postponed beyond the duration of the mandate”. The mandate of the outgoing president must expire on April 2, 2024. Having noted that the presidential election cannot be held on February 24 as initially planned, he invites the Senegalese authorities to organize this election “as soon as possible”.
