Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – The Senegal national soccer team announced on Thursday that the team’s forward Sadio Mane would be absent from the World Cup finals in Qatar between November and December due to injury.
It was decided that 30-year-old Mane would undergo surgery, after medical tests confirmed the need for it.
The Senegalese striker complained of pain in his leg during his side’s last meeting with Bayern Munich and Werder Bremen in the German league competition before leaving the pitch at his own request, and was substituted 21 minutes into the game.
Sadio Mane is regarded as one of the most important elements of the ‘Teranga Lions’ squad, as he previously led them to capture the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations title and qualify for the Qatar World Cup.
Mane has 31 goals for his country, having appeared in 59 international matches.
Interestingly, the Senegalese national team is in Group A, in the finals of the World Cup, together with the teams: Holland, Qatar and Ecuador.
