The half marathon in New York did not take place in 2020 and 2021 during the corona pandemic. This year there are again 25,000 participants. They have good running weather on a street course, which is not known for being super fast. The start is in Brooklyn and the finish is in Central Park. In the women’s race, Senbere Teferi (Eth.) wins a course record in 1:07:35. In the men’s race, the victory is for the Kenyan Rhonex Kipruto (1.00.30).
Kipruto (22) makes it clear from the start that he came to New York for first place. After 5 kilometers there is already a small difference. The decision is made at Manhattan Bridge. The Kenyan athlete is not very fast (relatively) in the last kilometers, but he is already certain of the win. Second is the Kenyan Edward Cheserek (1.00.37) and third Teshone Mekonen from Ethiopia at 1.00.40. Eleventh is Benjamin de Haan (1.02.24, pr).
For the women, the Ethiopian Senbere Teferi and the Kenyan Irene Cheptai take the initiative. The last 200 meters is decisive with 1.07.35 as the winning time. Cheptai finishes two seconds later. Teferi is six seconds faster than the New York course record of American Molly Huddle in 2017. Also this year there are many strong American top athletes, but they are not competing for the podium places. With a personal best, Norwegian Karoline Bjerkeli Grovdal is third in the women’s race in 1:08:07. In her own country she is third of all time behind the former world stars Ingrid Kristiansen and Grete Waitz.
