Determined to win the Stanley Cup, Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk has hinted that the team will be active in the transaction market next season to make their dream come true very quickly.
Melnyk had previously expressed his optimism this fall, when commenting on the additions of Matt Murray, Erik Gudbranson, Evgenii Dadonov and Alex Galchenyuk. He had previously mentioned that he believed the club could win the Stanley Cup within four years.
He now believes he has a team claiming top honors and the mandate of the General Manager, Pierre Dorion, will be to make some adjustments to achieve this this year.
“We have taken a step forward,” said Melnyk daily. Ottawa Sun, Sunday. Now we have to realize what we can do with what we have. This team, with what we have now, can win the Stanley Cup, I believe, and that’s without adding a few veterans, which we plan to do. ”
“We will be an active team at the trade deadline; we will not be sellers, but buyers, as we were before. ”
Dream
After three seasons in which the team finished last or penultimate in the Atlantic section of the National Hockey League (NHL), Melnyk is proud of the work accomplished. A result, he believes, of a well thought out plan to rebuild the team.
“I didn’t come to Ottawa 17 years ago just to be there, just to play and be competitive. If I didn’t believe I could win a Stanley Cup, I would have left already, and very quickly. I would never have bought the concession.
“We are destined to be successful. We have put this team together well. We are well placed. I hope I’m right that we are not just going to be competitive, we can dream. My goal this season is to make people dream. My dream is to win the Stanley Cup and to be able to do it from scratch. We have made a great team, there has been a thought process and it has come to fruition as planned. ”
