WASHINGTON – For 90 tense minutes, senators relived the horror.
They had seen much of the video of the insurrection before, but not like this, on screens near their desks, with screams and anguish echoing through the camera, while Democratic prosecutors explained in detail how close they came to danger on 6 January, and how could it have been so much worse.
Second day of impeachment against former President Donald Trump, and Democrats presented new evidence. They also armed themselves with other images and tweets of the former president that they say incited his group of supporters to an insurrection.
If some senators were tempted to avoid seeing images of the violence on Capitol Hill, or to bury the memories of fleeing the violent mob of Donald Trump supporters, that was no longer possible.
“We lived through this once and it was horrible,” said Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski, recalling how she felt when she evacuated the room with her colleagues. “And now we are living it with a more exhaustive chronology.”
Although videos of the siege have been circulating since day one of the invasion, the explicit compilation provided a fuller narrative, with a chilling focus on the rioters’ methodical search for lawmakers.
