Senator Lindsey Graham flew to Ukraine with a US delegation on Friday and met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He then called on the Biden administration to increase support for Kiev. Selenskyi again called for long-range weapons and air defense systems during the encounter. The fight against the “criminal activities of the Wagner group in Ukraine and beyond” is said to have been discussed.
Zelenskyy then thanked Lindsey Graham via Telegram and Instagram “for his unyielding stance and contribution to strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities” and “all American society, President Biden and the US Congress for their strong bipartisan support for Ukraine.”
Graham himself had initially pointed out the cross-party support for the United States, which, according to the polls, is now dwindling on both sides of the political spectrum, including the Democrats.
Reuters and the Ukrainian President’s press service attended the meeting. A video of it that Zelenskyj shared, and which also made its way through the media, subsequently caused considerable irritation on social media among Americans too – sometimes even outrage. Some reactions ranged from “disgusting” to “disgusting”.
The two politicians can be seen on May 26 surrounded by high-ranking officials. The recordings were first released by Andriy Yermak, head of the Ukrainian presidential office, accompanied by dramatic piano music. In it, Graham can be heard saying, “The Russians are dying,” and then, “This is the best money we’ve ever spent.”
“This is disgusting!!!” says one Twitter user. “God only knows what goes on behind the scenes with these warmongers.” Another commented, “Imagine how the United States would react if Russia said that about American citizens!” Terribly harsh words from a senator.”
The US senator also received approval from some Ukraine supporters. A tweeter analyzed: “He’s not wrong. Russia has shown that it is still an enemy, and the war in Ukraine has provided a perfect opportunity to eliminate that enemy’s military capabilities without cost. Because of this, US military aid will continue to flow indefinitely.” However, some doubt that is helping. “The same deal they made with the mujahideen and bin Laden against the Russians worked well,” writes one. Another: “Waiting for this bad movie to end.”
However, the statements by the US politician are not all that surprising. Lindsay Graham is considered a neocon survivor from the Bush era. He has visited Ukraine at least three times since the invasion began, called for the assassination of Vladimir Putin, demanded that the US attack Russian planes directly, and has even called for the US to station troops in Taiwan to fight the Chinese.
