New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced a new bill that would provide federal funds for initiatives that help public transportation prepare for severe storms and flooding.
Following the historic storm and flooding that caused severe damage to the upstate last weekend, Senator Gillibrand shared details about a bill that seeks to fortify public transportation systems against inclement weather.
“More than nine million people have been under flood warnings across the Northeast. Some people have had to swim out of their cars, dozens have had to evacuate and even more have seen their homes, cars and businesses destroyed by this disaster. “said the senator about the floods that occurred last weekend.
The Resilient Transit Act is the name of Gillibrand’s proposed legislation that aims to secure federal funds to prepare public transportation systems to withstand severe weather events before they occur.
The senator spoke about this project, taking into account the flooding caused by more than nine inches of rain that left extensive damage throughout the state, including the Metro-North train lines.
“I think that if we need that, why isn’t this the first time this has happened to us? And I live in upstate New York and I have passed all that water, trees, the structure breaks this and if it is needed,” said Julio Menéndez, user directly affected.
The measure would add funds to a Federal Transit Administration grant program that specifically serves resiliency projects for maintenance, replacement and rehabilitation work on public transportation systems. The initiative would authorize $300 million for each of the fiscal years 2024 through 2027.
The federal resources sought to be approved will be used to make improvements to highways, bridges, tunnels, trains, and ferries, in our city and other parts of the State.
“It would be very good because it is a method that many people use and you know that this is the method of transportation for many to get to work, not everyone in this country has the opportunity to have a car,” said Angie Rojas, a user of the transportation system. .
Not very different is the opinion of Diana Ermenegildo, also a user of the system.
“I think it would be quite good, why doesn’t it work every time something happens, small or not, nothing works, because it’s sorely needed”.
