Senator Cruz Proposes Bill to Block Russian-Iranian Military Cooperation

Republican and Senator Ted Cruz said he is working on a bill against military-technical cooperation between Russia and Iran. In his opinion, the US administration is not trying to interfere with Russian-Iranian cooperation.

According to him, the bill is aimed at applying sanctions against banks, oil tankers, aircraft, airports, ships and shipyards, which Russia and Iran can use in the framework of cooperation between themselves. Ted Cruz also said that the document involves the blocking of billions of dollars “that Iran has abroad.”

“Cooperation between Russia and Iran is large-scale, it is deepening. The Biden administration is not even trying to counteract this,” Mr. Cruz said during a speech at the Hudson Institute in Washington (quoted from TASS).

Over the summer, media and US officials reported that Russia was buying Iranian drones. Moscow denied this. In the fall of 2022, the Iranian Foreign Ministry reported that it supplied drones to Russia “in small quantities” even before the start of the special operation in Ukraine.

On May 15, the White House announced sanctions against military-technical cooperation between Iran and Russia. John Kirby, strategic communications coordinator at the White House National Security Council, said that this cooperation is mainly manifested in the supply of drones, artillery shells and ammunition to Moscow. Russia has received more than 400 UAVs from Iran, mostly Shahed kamikaze drones, according to the White House.
