Senator Juan Luis Castro, chairman of the Senate’s Energy and Mining Commission, expressed his deep concern and discontent over the recent and prolonged power outage that has affected hundreds of thousands of people across the country.
Describing the situation as “unacceptable from every point of view,” Senator Castro made an urgent call to the main electricity distribution companies, such as Enel, CGE and Saesa, to take immediate measures to benefit the affected customers.
“This scandalous situation with power outages for days on end for hundreds of thousands of people is unacceptable from every point of view. Here, trust is placed in monopolistic companies, there are permanent payments, there are rates that are constantly rising, and these companies have not responded to the citizens,” said Senator Castro.
In his statement, the senator for the O’Higgins region stressed that the only way to compensate for the damage caused to citizens is for these companies to stop collecting their share of the electricity bill for the remainder of 2024.
“That is to say, that large distribution companies, such as Enel, CGE, Saesa, should not collect their share, which is 20% of the total bill, as a way of partially repairing the damage caused to those hundreds of thousands of people who have suffered this tragedy, which was not only unforeseen, but which, had it been planned, would have had the conditions and capabilities to mitigate the effects of this storm,” he added.
Senator Castro’s position is clear and direct: “We are putting this directly to the largest electricity distribution companies. I hope that this has a clear and correct meaning, because they cannot be forced, but they can be publicly asked to make a gesture towards those who are harmed and damaged, which are the citizens.”
Senator Castro hopes that this request will be taken into account by the aforementioned companies and that action will be taken to alleviate the negative impact that these interruptions have had on the daily lives of Chileans. The Senate Energy and Mining Commission will continue to monitor the situation and work to ensure that the needs of customers are met and respected.
