Senate Vote on Ukraine Aid and Border Security Package Faces Uncertain Future in House of Representatives

The vote could possibly take place on Wednesday, reports Reuters. If it is passed by the Senate, it goes on to the House of Representatives.

There it faces an uncertain future. The House of Representatives has not passed any new Ukraine aid since Republicans won the majority in January 2023, and Speaker Mike Johnson indicated on Monday that there is dissatisfaction with the Senate package. Republicans want strict border security measures to be included.

– Now, in the absence of a single change in policy on the border, the House will have to continue working on its own with these important issues. The United States deserves better than the Senate’s status quo, Johnson said in a statement.

The Republicans insisted for months that a new package of support for Ukraine must also include measures on the Mexican border, where the flow of migrants is large.

But last week, Republican senators reversed course and voted no to a bipartisan package that, after four months of negotiations, was billed as the biggest effort on border security and immigration in at least a decade. It happened at the request of former President Donald Trump.

At the same time, Ukraine says it needs more weapons at a time when Russia is pushing for renewed attacks.
