Mexico City. Tonight the Senate unanimously approved the constitutional reform sent by President Claudia Sheinbaum, regarding substantive equality, gender perspective, women’s right to a life free of violence and eradication of the gender pay gap.
The endorsement given to the document in general and in particular by 126 votes in favor was celebrated by the legislators, who applauded and shouted with joy.
During the debate that lasted for four hours, there were only participations in favor, although the opposition took the opportunity to request that this legal framework be accompanied by public policies in which women can be reflected, in all areas of government.
PRI senator Cynthia López Castro thus fought to recover full-time schools, since with the cancellation of these there were mothers who had to stop working because they did not have anyone to take care of their children.
He also demanded a budget with a gender perspective, to make substantive equality and the existence of specialized prosecutors contemplated in the document a reality.
From Morena, Martha Lucia Micher noted out loud that yesterday was a historic day, after remembering the mistreatment that women have suffered for years and the progress that the endorsed constitutional change means. I advocate that equality becomes customary in the country.
The reform modifies articles 4,21, 41, 73, 116, 122 and 123 of the Constitution. It proposes that the State guarantee the enjoyment and exercise of the rights to substantive equality of women and a life free of violence. For the latter, it has reinforced protection duties with women, adolescents, girls and boys.
Likewise, it is expected that justice institutions will have prosecutors’ offices to investigate crimes based on gender.
It is also established that the appointments of the heads of the public administration of the federal executive branch and their equivalents in the federal entities and municipalities will have to observe the principle of parity.
Likewise, it proposes that the law establish mechanisms aimed at reducing and eradicating the gender wage gap. Equal pay will correspond to equal work, regardless of gender, the initiative states.
In a transitional article, it is stated that entities must harmonize the legal framework corresponding to the content of the reform within a period not exceeding 180 days from its entry into force.
