Senasica orders vaccination to protect poultry production from AH5N1 avian influenza

In the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) AH5N1 The National Service for Hygiene, Safety and Agri-Food Quality (Senasica) has ordered the strategic vaccination of long-lived birds in high health risk areas.

SADER reported that vaccination will be carried out according to a strategic plan designed by the technicians of the Directorate General for Animal Health (DGSA) of Senasica, in coordination with the National Union of Poultry Breeders (UNA), which provides, in the first instance, for the protection of parent and breeding birds, since they are all origin of the production chain, since they are the mothers of the broiler chicks and the hens that lay the eggs.

Similarly, the plan considers the protection of poultry production units located in high risk areas animal health and thus avoid losses in chicken and egg production for dishes.

SADER specified that at the moment there are vaccines produced by three laboratories in Mexico for sale abroad, but, in the presence of the IAP AH5N1it was asked to include the distribution in this country of UPA authorized by Senasica to vaccinate its birds.

He explained that the efficacy tests of the vaccines currently produced in Mexico were carried out in the reference laboratories of the World Organization for Animal Health (WHO) in other countries, which is why the effectiveness of available biologics is considered.

In order to have greater certainties, the technicians of the National Center for Diagnostic Services in Animal Health (Cenasa) of Senasica, in coordination with the UNA, tests are already underway to verify the response of the organic against the strain circulating in Mexico.

Control actions progress

So far the technicians of the United States-Mexico Commission for the Prevention of foot-and-mouth disease and other diseases of exotic animals (CPA) of Senasica confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza AH5N1 in nine entities in the country.

It affected four commercial UPAs, three of them in Sonora and one in Nuevo León, as well as three backyard farms: Chiapas, Chihuahua and the State of Mexico, with a total of 492 thousand birds slaughteredwhich means 0.023% of the national poultry inventory, so the supply of chicken and eggs for the national market is not affected.
