Senacsa starts today with the first period of foot-and-mouth disease vaccination

The National Animal Health and Quality Service (Senacsa), through a statement, reported that the dates of the first vaccination period of 2023 have already been established. According to Resolution No. 1610 of October 25, 2022, Senacsa defined that the first vaccination period against foot-and-mouth disease in 2023, for the entire national territory, is from today, January 23, to March 3.

The defined dates are for the entire national territory and correspond to the general farm (bovines and buffaloes). Regarding the registration of vaccination, the statement indicates that it can be carried out until March 17 of next year.

On the other hand, the health service issued Resolution No. 1611, which establishes the first vaccination period of 2023 against bovine brucellosis. The interval is the same, that is, from January 23 to March 3 of the current year; while registration can be made until March 17.

Regarding vaccination against bovine brucellosis, Senacsa recalls that it corresponds to young females, between 3 and 8 months of age, throughout the national territory.

Vaccination discussion. Last year a debate was opened about the intention to abandon the foot-and-mouth disease vaccine.

Senacsa’s plan was to immunize the herd for the last time in 2024. However, the farmers not only reject the project of leaving the vaccines, but now they are talking about a new paradigm at the international level, in which the health status is recognized from each “foot-and-mouth disease-free” country, without mentioning the use or not of syringes.
