Last month, the domestic automobile industry tripled in production, domestic demand, and exports increased by double digits in five months.- According to the monthly trend of the automobile industry in January released by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on the 15th, domestic car production last month was 31,190 units, up 24.9% from the same period last year. It recorded the highest growth rate since October 2018. It seems that production normalization, new car effects, and extension of individual consumption tax reduction by 30% due to the conclusion of an agreement with the automobile industry were combined.-
Domestic sales were totaled 13,7692 units. All domestic cars up to the top 5 in the most sales were occupied. Grandeur, which ranked first in annual sales last year, sold the most last month. The effect of new cars such as Granger, Tucson, and Carnival continued, and the number of business days increased by two days, up 18.4% from last year. Imports sold 22,317 cars, an increase of 27.3% from a year ago. European and Japanese brands were sluggish, but German brands such as Mercedes and BMW (BMW) showed good performance.

Exports totaled 19,2322 units thanks to the recovery of economic activity in major markets such as the US and Europe. It increased 29.5% from last year. The recovery of demand in the US, the largest export market, and strong sales of sports utility vehicles (SUVs) led to the expansion of exports.- By car type, exports of all car types except light cars increased. SUVs soared 37.7%. The proportion of SUV exports also increased by 3.7 percentage points (P) to 71.7% of the total.- Exports reached 4 billion dollars, an increase of 40.2% from a year ago. It showed the highest growth rate since September 2017. The increase in exports of Palisade (75.2%) and the increase in value-added export items, such as the expansion of the Santa Fe hybrid and GV80, contributed to the increase in the export unit price. By region, most markets such as North America (40.2%), European Union (EU 71.7%), Eastern Europe (54.9%), Oceania (64.8%) and Asia (42.0%) increased. However, the Middle East (-24.9%) decreased.-
It has been only five months since September last year that automobile production, domestic demand, and exports all grew. In December of last year, production decreased by 12.0%, domestic demand decreased by 6.0%, and export decreased by 14.6%. It was sluggish due to a partial strike by the Kia Motors union and shrinking demand in the European market following the re-proliferation of Corona 19.

Eco-friendly cars also increased in both domestic and export. Domestic sales were totaled 19,922 units. It increased by 126.4% from a year ago. It has been increasing for 12 consecutive months. Hybrid (128.6%), plug-in hybrid (484.5%), and hydrogen cars (75.3%) showed strong sales. Exports were 32,035 units, up 76.5% from last year. The share of total exports is about 25%. Exports reached a record high of $900 million (100%).
In the case of electric vehicles, exports increased by 57.7%. It has been increasing for 42 consecutive months. By car type, 6183 Niros (379.7%) were exported, driving the increase. On the other hand, domestic sales fell 50.6%.-
Auto parts exports recorded 1.81 billion dollars, a 3.9% increase from a year ago, driven by the strong SUVs in the North American market. It continued to increase for 3 consecutive months.
