Selling PS4 or Xbox One? Do this first

A new generation of consoles is underway and many who have gone for the acquisition of either PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X | S, or maybe both, have plans to get rid of their old consoles.

Before you put your used PlayStation 4 or Xbox One up for sale, there are a few things you need to make sure the new owner can unpack a fully reset console and not have access to your account information.

Below we show you how to make your old game console for sale.

Be aware of this

Before you start resetting your console, you should be aware that PS5 / Xbox Series X and S can play PS4 and Xbox One games, so you may want to transfer your games to an external hard drive, if you have one available, then plug it into your new console and play the games instantly.

Note, however, that some games cannot be played from an external disk and that some must also be updated.

Also keep in mind that physical games for PS4 / Xbox One can be played on the new consoles, (not on the digital versions without optical drive, of course), so you should not necessarily sell them.

How to do it on PS4

On PlayStation 4, there are 3 steps you should go through before putting it up for sale: back it up, remove it from your PlayStation account, and restore it.

You do not have to back up your PS4, but it may speed up the setup of your PS5.

Keep in mind, however, that if you do not have PSN and cloud storage, you must back up your game storage before resetting the console so that you can continue where you left off in your games when playing on PS5.

To back up:

  • Connect an external hard drive or USB memory stick to your PS4 and open settings
  • then select System
  • scroll down to Backup and restore
  • Print Backup PS4 and follow the on-screen instructions

Alternatively, there is also a data transfer function on PS5 (Settings, system, system software, data transfer) that allows you to transfer data from PS4 to PS5 by connecting the two to the same wireless network, or directly with network cable. But that requires that you already have a PS5 in house, of course.

To disable the console as your primary PS4

  • To open settings
  • Select account management
  • Select activate as your primary PS4
  • Select disable

To reset PS4:

  • To open settings
  • Select initialization
  • Select initialize ps4 and follow the instructions. Once done, the contents of the console will be the same as when you first unpacked it.

Before you sell away, it may be worth noting that you can play PlayStation 5 games on a PlayStation 4 if you use the remote play function in the home network, where you can, for example, have a PS5 standing in the living room, but move to the bedroom and continue playing Demon’s Souls there when others in the house are going to use the living room TV.

The resolution is limited to 1080p (and not 4K as on PS5), but you can at least use the PS4 controller. We just thought it was worth mentioning.

Here’s how to do it on Xbox One

If you have an Xbox One, you must first reset it and then remove it from your Microsoft account. You can back up your Xbox settings and upload them to Xbox Series X or Series S, but they can also be downloaded from the cloud on the new console.

Unlike on PlayStation, cloud storage of game storage is free on Xbox One and it is automatically uploaded to the cloud when you quit the game or console. Game storage is then downloaded when you sign in to your Xbox account on the new Xbox console so you can continue where you left off.

If you have not had Xbox One connected to the internet, however, you must retrieve the game storage manually.

To back up Xbox One:

  • Connect an external hard drive or USB memory stick to Xbox One and open settings
  • select System
  • select Backup & transfer
  • select Backup of settings and follow the on-screen instructions
