On January 13, the event “In the middle of the island” will take place in Viesīte Culture Center “Sēlija”, during which the folk dance collectives of Sēlia will learn new dances created especially for Sēlia. Folklorists Julgī Stalte and Āriks Zeps (group “TKP / tāka kā pērn”), as well as choreographer Jānis Purvinņš implemented the project, during which arrangements were created for specially selected folk songs from Selia, as well as created choreographies.
The cooperation of “TKP” with choreographer Jānis Purviņa began almost ten years ago, while three folk music arrangements and choreographies were created for the Kurzeme district youth dance concert “Zelta zemes vidinė” a couple of years ago. Then the heritage of Zemgale was highlighted, creating new works for the Latvian stage dance concert “Balts” of the General Festival of Songs and Dances, which was held in “Arena Rīga” last year, says Āriks Zeps about the collaboration with Jānis Purviņu.
“As the journey continued, it was clear that the next honor belongs to the Selia region, which recently was finally legally appointed as a full-fledged fifth star in the family of Latvian regions,” explains Zeps. “It fortunately happened that the time of the implementation of the idea coincided with the first “Selia’s Culture Program” of 2023 (the “Selia’s Culture Program” 2023 project competition of the State Cultural Capital Fund’s target program “Latvian Historical Lands Development Program”), with the support of which three new songs in the post-folklore style were created , intertwined with three new choreographies by Jānis Purviņš.”
“The idea of the project was to select the most appropriate songs of Celia, to create their arrangement, to study Celia’s typical steps, basing them in the newly created choreographies. In each new work, the specific place from which the song comes is highlighted, and a plant is attached to it, to which references can be seen in the dance. This is our sense of Selia, which we have felt both while studying Selia folklore, meeting with local cultural activists, and staying in Selia. Our proof of respect for the diverse culture of Selia and the hope that (including highlighting the local aspect) we have managed to fully enrich the dowry of Selia,” emphasize the authors of the project.
On January 13, the activity in Viesīte Culture Center “Sēlija” will start at 11:00, when the new dances will be presented to the folk dance groups of Sēlija region. Although the dances will be staged in specific collectives, everyone interested will have the opportunity to participate in master classes of dance familiarization. Therefore, everyone is invited to dance with the dance ensembles, so that afterwards these dances can also be danced in their collectives (music and descriptions will be freely available). At 11:00 JDK “Ance” from Ilūkste will learn the dance “Ilūkstes ozoli” (groups B and C); at 13:00 JDK “Kauranieši” from Jēkabpils will learn the dance “Vārnava night violin”. On the other hand, at 15:00 the dance “Neretas rudzu rogas” (groups B, C, D, E) will be learned by VPDK “Augšzeme” from Viesita.
On the other hand, at 19:00, a concert will begin, in which Julgī Stalte and Āriks Zeps, together with the group “TKP / tā kā kā pērn”, will share their feelings about roots, the power of belonging and the heritage of the people. Also, in the performance of Celia’s dance groups, there will be an opportunity to evaluate the newly staged dances, everyone will have the opportunity to share their story of Celia’s feelings.
About the “TKP” group:
- Julgī Stalte is the leader of the oldest folklore group in Latvia “Skandinieki”; also worked in the projects “Tulli Lum”, “Kalā Jeng”, “Tai tai”, etc
- Eriks Zeps is the leader of the most energetic post-folkloric group of Latgalians “Rikši”, who has played in “Dziesmu danse”, “Taktonika” and other groups, as well as led quite a few folklore events.
- Ingus Grīnbergs is a violinist, violin pedagogue who, in addition to working in the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra and several chamber ensembles, likes to try his hand at music of various genres.
- Artūrs Yefremovs manages his daily work in a completely different industry, however, he also devotes a considerable part of his time to several music projects, where he assumes the role of a bassist, music producer, and also a podcast author.
- Pēteris Narubins with guitars, mandolins and vocals can be found in the groups “The Coco’nuts” and “Rahu The Fool”, as well as in solo projects and folk jams.
The project is co-financed by the Media Support Fund from the funds of the Latvian state budget.
