Automatic Market: These three items were the best sellers on the first day

Migros is opening an unmanned self-service market in Scherzingen TG. The market functions completely without sales staff and is always open.

  • A new Migros market in Scherzingen does not require any sales staff and is open around the clock.

  • However, you can only gain access with a credit card or as a member of the bonus program.

  • Video and sensor surveillance protects customers and against theft.

A new Migros market was inaugurated in Scherzingen TG on Thursday. What’s special: There is no sales staff – the concept is called Migros Teo. The market is open around the clock and offers over 800 different products on 50 square meters.

However, it is not possible to just walk into the market because you have to show a debit, credit or Cumulus card first. Payments can also be made electronically, and the market is also fully monitored by video and sensors.

Top selling items on opening day

Platz 2: Vermicelli-Beaker

Platz 3: Red Bull Energy-Drink

“It’s becoming more and more automated anyway.”

Sabrina (46) shops in the new market and is thrilled: “I think the market is great – everything goes smoothly. I’m already used to scanning everything myself.”

Kai (21) also finds the concept innovative: “It’s something new.” However, some can also imagine that a lot is stolen. “My girlfriend’s parents certainly think so,” says Kai.

This is what residents say about the new market.

“Employees only cause stress”

Boris (14) is happy that there are no sales employees. “They usually just cause stress.” His friend Louis (16) doesn’t really care whether there are sales staff or not. Neither of them thinks that there will be more theft. “You have to show your credit card and there is video surveillance so you would immediately know who stole.”

Leni (65) and Eugen (72) appreciate the opportunity to shop outside of regular opening hours.

800 to 900 items in the range

20 Minutes asks Migros why the concept could work. «The crucial point is that the self-service store has a large range, around 800 to 900 items. And: The prices are the same as in normal supermarkets,” says media spokeswoman Silke Seichter.

And what about theft? “Theft is not worth it in Migros Teo. There are on-site controls and the stores are also under video surveillance,” says Migros.

Automatic markets as a supplement

“We want to close gaps – even in the middle of rural areas,” says media spokeswoman Seichter. “The self-service markets are only intended as a supplement.”

According to Migros, there is only one legend about the name of the market, namely that one of the German founding fathers of the concept was called Teo.
