Anyone who uses WhatsApp regularly knows: You can specify in the settings of each chat that messages are automatically deleted after 7 days:
Activate self-erasing messages
In a one-to-one chat, both participants can switch on self-deleting messages. As soon as the setting is active, new messages will disappear from the chat after 7 days.
- Open the WhatsApp chat.
- Tap the contact’s name.
- Tap on Self-erasing messages.
- When prompted, tap Continue.
- Choose A.
Switch off self-erasing messages
Both participants can switch off self-deleting messages at any time. As soon as the setting is no longer active, new messages no longer disappear from the chat.
- Open the WhatsApp chat.
- Tap the contact’s name.
- Tap on Self-erasing messages.
- When prompted, tap Continue.
- Choose the end.

This can offer a little more protection from snoopers, but this does not necessarily mean more “temporary secret” among the participants, because they could take screenshots.
WhatsApp will expand the self-deleting messages, because the current beta version of WhatsApp on iOS already indicates this. If you now go to the self-deleting messages in the settings of a chat, you will not only get a new look for self-deleting messages, you will also have more choice. You can now decide between 24 hours, 7 days and 90 days per chat – a standard message duration can also be set. There are also 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days – that applies to new chats. It is not yet known when the function will be in the final version of WhatsApp. Under Android it’s been in beta for a long time.
