When the police pulled over to the car running at full speed on the highway he couldn’t believe his eyes. There seemed to be no one driving and instead the driver, a 20-year-old boy, had his seat reclined and had fallen asleep, trusting in the self-driving of his car, a Tesla Model S. Next to him another person, also asleep. The young man, reports the BBC online, was indicted for unsafe driving. The incident took place near Ponoka, in the state of Alberta, last July, but has only now been disclosed, in view of the trial scheduled for December.
“I’ve been in the police for 23 years, but I’ve never seen anything like it,” said one of the officers who stopped the car. The 20-year-old was in the driver’s seat of a Tesla Model S. Currently the cars produced by the group founded by Elon Musk operate with a level two autopilot, which requires the driver to remain alert, hands on the wheel and ready to react to any unforeseen events. According to Musk himself, the first fully self-driving models should be produced by the end of the year, although there are “many small problems” to be solved before reaching this stage.
