In February 2020 the Federal Constitutional Court made it clear that the general right of personality as an expression of personal autonomy includes a “right to self-determined death”. This ruling makes a number of requirements that the legislature must use as a guide. Gastel discusses suggestions and points of view on the subject with Wolfgang Putz, lawyer in a law firm specializing in medical law and lecturer in law and ethics in medicine at the LMU Munich, with Renate Künast, member of the German Bundestag, who, together with other members of the Bundestag, drafted a bill “to protect the Right to self-determined death ”initiated and with Dr. Dietmar Merz, head of studies at the Evangelical Academy Bad Boll with a focus on medical ethics and health policy.
