Seldom do Immigration System Disruptions Cause Extended Lines at Changi.

Singapore

A rare flight delay occurred at Changi Airport, Singapore, due to disturbances at the gate for automatic immigration checks on Friday (31/3) local time. This has an impact on hundreds of travelers who have to long queue for immigration check before flying.

As reported AFPFriday (31/3/2023), the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) in a statement via Facebook announced a “delay at certain passenger clearance checkpoints” which triggered the delay.

The impact of the disruption was quite significant with the ICA advising travelers to postpone non-essential overseas trips.

Long queues were reported at Changi Airportwhich is frequently voted the best airport in the world with usually easy immigration checks.

“Totally chaotic at T4 and very little communication,” wrote one Facebook user, along with a photo of passengers filling the airport lobby.

A traveler who was at Changi Airport said that passengers with scheduled flights that had to leave immediately were summoned to undergo immigration inspection at the manual counter.

It was also mentioned by other travelers that the ‘super long’ queue initially occurred at Changi Airport Terminal 1, before the manual counter handled the passengers quickly so that the queue unraveled.

“Disruption to the immigration system has impacted on the automated passage of passengers departing and arriving at various terminals,” the Changi Airport said in a statement.
