Approximately 2 weeks have passed since the 2020 Noto Peninsula Earthquake. As seismic activity continues, there was an earthquake with a maximum seismic intensity of 4 in Hokkaido yesterday on the 13th, and an earthquake with a maximum seismic intensity of 3 in Akita Prefecture in the afternoon on the 14th today.

2020 Noto Peninsula Earthquake 16 times with a seismic intensity of lower 5 or higher

At around 16:10 on January 1st, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake occurred with its epicenter in the Noto region of Ishikawa Prefecture, and a maximum seismic intensity of 7 was observed in Shiga Town, Ishikawa Prefecture. Just before that, at around 16:06, a magnitude 5.7 earthquake occurred with its epicenter in the Noto region of Ishikawa Prefecture, and a maximum seismic intensity of 5+ was observed in Suzu City, Ishikawa Prefecture. Since then, earthquakes have occurred one after another, mainly in Ishikawa Prefecture.

As of 13:00 on the 14th, there have been over 50 earthquakes with a seismic intensity of 4 or higher, of which 16 have been observed with a seismic intensity of 5 lower or higher.

Meanwhile, at around 3:56 pm on the 13th yesterday, an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.9 and an epicenter estimated to be approximately 10 km deep occurred in the northern Kushiro region, and a maximum seismic intensity of 4 was observed in Teshikaga Town, Hokkaido. Additionally, at around 12:24 today on the 14th, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.1 and an epicenter estimated to be approximately 10 km deep occurred in the northern inland area of Akita Prefecture, with a maximum seismic intensity of 3 being observed in Kazuno City, Akita Prefecture. .

Weather is downhill on the Sea of Japan side, rain starts late in the evening in Hokuriku, warning of stormy weather from 15th to 16th

Today, the 14th, there was some sunshine in the Hokuriku region, but the weather is slowly going downhill. It will start raining late tonight (the 14th), and by the time the date changes, it will turn to snow.

Tomorrow, the 15th and 16th, due to strong cold air, snow will continue to fall on the Japan Sea side of northern Japan and Hokuriku, and there is a risk of heavy snowfall. Winds will be stronger from the north, and there will be blizzard conditions in some places.

The predicted cumulative snowfall amount for the 72 hours up to 12:00 on Tuesday the 17th shows that there are many red spots in Hokuriku, Tohoku, and Hokkaido with more than 80 centimeters, and pink spots with more than 100 centimeters, mainly in the high altitude areas of Niigata Prefecture. You can see it.

30 to 50 centimeters of orange snow is expected to fall in the Noto region, making it likely to be the heaviest snowfall since the New Year’s Day earthquake. Buildings damaged by the earthquake, such as houses, are at risk of collapsing if snow accumulates, so extra vigilance is required.

Continue to be careful about seismic activity

Seismic activity continues to be active mainly in the Noto region of Ishikawa Prefecture. Areas that experienced strong shaking from the magnitude 7.6 earthquake that occurred on January 1st are at increased risk of collapsed houses and landslides. When carrying out recovery activities, please pay close attention to future seismic activity and rainfall/snow conditions, and take precautions to ensure your own safety by not entering dangerous areas unless there are unavoidable circumstances.

Although the possibility of an earthquake similar to the magnitude 7.6 earthquake that occurred on January 1st has decreased compared to when the earthquake first occurred, seismic activity remains high. Please be on the lookout for earthquakes with a maximum seismic intensity of 5 or higher for the next month or so.

The range of seismic activity has expanded compared to last December, and stronger shaking has been observed over a wider area than before. Also, if a large-scale earthquake occurs on the ocean floor, you need to be careful about tsunamis.
