MOVIE REVIEW. Jerry Seinfeld’s comedy about the sweet American classic Pop-tarts has, in theory, everything. But in practice it is too much.
Like a hysterical buffet.
COMEDY. Pop-tarts have never become a thing in Sweden, but in the United States, the filled rectangular pastries, which can be toasted in a toaster or heated in the microwave, have been one of Kellogg’s best sellers since the 60s.
Jerry Seinfeld has joked about them before, and now he’s making his feature directorial debut with an entire film about them, loosely based on the true story of their origin.
It’s the early 60s in Battle Creek, Michigan, where the two breakfast cereal giants are feuding.
Kellogg’s, where Bob Cabana (Seinfeld) is working. And Post, there Marjorie Post (Amy Schumer) rules with an iron fist.
Now a revolutionary alternative to cereal is on the way, and a desperate race to catch up first begins, fringed with foul play, espionage, mafia methods and sleazy experts.
“Unfrosted” is absolutely full of stars and inspired elements. Like portraying the situation as the breakfast industry’s answer to the space race and arms race between the US and the Soviet Union. And to let Hugh Grant play a pretentious actor who tries to combine his gig as the mascot Tony Tiger with spreading fine culture.
But the overall impression becomes hysterical. And with the exception of a slightly brilliant scene with probably the best cameos of the year, this movie is never as funny as it should be.
Shown on Netflixfrom May 3.
