Seine-Saint-Denis. The IGPN seized after the death of a driver killed by a police officer during a check

A 30-year-old who was driving a stolen van died on Saturday after being shot by a policeman who was trying to arrest him between Sevran and Aulnay-sous-Bois (Seine-Saint-Denis) in circumstances that remain to be determined, said the Bobigny prosecution.

Transported to hospital in critical condition yesterday at midday, the victim born in 1988 died of his injuries, said the prosecution.

The policeman uses his weapon “for reasons that remain unclear”

Warned around 12:30 p.m. of the theft of a van, a crew from the anti-crime brigade (BAC) quickly spotted the vehicle and tried to control it at a red light. For reasons that remain unclear at this stage, one of the officials used his service weapon once, “a bullet that hit the driver” of the stolen vehicle, detailed the same source. According to the union of national police commissioners, a police officer was knocked down when the driver tried to flee.

The motorist nevertheless continued his journey for “a few hundred meters”, before ending his race by hitting parked cars, in an alley in the Beaudottes district, in Sevran.

The IGPN seized, the mayor of Sevran calls for calm

The General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN) was seized of the investigation. The policeman, hospitalized in shock, could not be heard on Saturday. The hearings of his colleagues were in progress.

Tensions arose in Sevran, where the motorist lived, following the tragedy. Security forces were sent as reinforcements for the night. Fireworks mortars were fired at the police, according to journalists present on the spot.

“The Prefect assured me that everything will be done to determine the exact circumstances of this tragedy” which affected the Sevranais “father of a family” and plunged the inhabitants of his district “in shock”, declared in a press release Stéphane Blanchet , the mayor of Sevran.

“As we wait and for everyone’s safety, it is essential that we remain calm,” he urged.
