Seine-Saint-Denis: demonstration of environmental defenders against intensive urbanization

Posted on Oct 5, 2021, 5:11 PM

The many regional development projects in Seine-Saint-Denis do not only make people happy. On Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 October, the local branch of the National Movement for the Fight for the Environment (MNLE), along with other Ile-de-France environmental movements, is organizing the “Land Marches”, which will end on Sunday noon with a convergence in Paris City Hall.

The object of the discontent: the many projects of concreteization of green spaces and fertile land in Ile-de-France. In Seine-Saint-Denis, among the symbolic projects in the sights of activists, there is the construction of a solarium on the site of the workers’ gardens of the Vertus, in Aubervilliers, or even the development of the “garden city” on the Aire des vents park in Dugny, where the Media Village should be hosted in anticipation of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Population concentration

But more generally, it is the whole dynamic of urbanization of the territory that is criticized. “Between 2010 and 2020, 2,400 housing units were built per year on the sole territory of the Paris Terre d’Envol intermunicipal association, while the State recommended only 2,045,” explains Jean-Marie Baty, president of MNLE 93. And still at the expense of green spaces! However, a large part of this so-called “luxury” housing is not even accessible to the inhabitants of the territory. “He points to the” garden city “project of the Aire des vents de Dugny as proof, in which only 20% of the 1,300 dwellings will be social housing.

“The municipalities of the department are increasingly becoming dormitory towns, with a lot of housing but very few jobs, in any case accessible to the inhabitants”, continues the president of the MNLE 93, citing an INSEE report. according to which 70% of the jobs of Seine-Saint-Denis would not benefit the inhabitants.

Conflicting policies

“All these projects are in contradiction with the ecologist discourse displayed. Some streets are vegetated but the Aire des Vents is artificialized, while there is already only 1.4 square meters of green space per inhabitant in Aubervilliers, against 10 recommended. There is a real schizophrenia of the elect! “

The MNLE 93 march will start on Saturday, October 9 at 9 a.m. from Gonesse and end with a debate evening in Pantin. A stage is planned at the Aire des Vents in Dugny, another in the Jardins des Vertus in Aubervilliers. The demonstration will resume on Sunday morning and will converge, with other local marches, towards the Hôtel de Ville in Paris and then towards Matignon.
