Seine-Saint-Denis. A 30-year-old driving a stolen van killed by a police officer

A 32-year-old man died this Saturday after being shot by a police officer in Aulnay-sous-Bois (in Seine-Saint-Denis). He was driving a stolen van. Transported to the hospital in critical condition at midday, the victim died of his injuries, said the Bobigny prosecutor’s office.

The facts took place at the junction of two neighboring towns in the department, Aulnay-sous-Bois and Sevran.

Fuzzy Circumstances

Warned around 12:30 p.m. of the theft of a van, a crew from the anti-crime brigade (BAC) quickly spotted the vehicle and tried to control it at a red light, traced the prosecution. For reasons that remain unclear at this stage, one of the officials fired his service weapon once, “with a bullet that hit the driver” of the stolen vehicle.

The motorist nevertheless continued his journey for “a few hundred meters”, before ending his race by hitting parked cars, in an alley in the Beaudottes district, in Sevran.

The policeman in shock

The General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN) was seized of the investigation. The policeman, hospitalized in shock, could not be heard this Saturday. The hearings of his colleagues were in progress. Tensions arose in Sevran following the tragedy. Security forces have been sent as reinforcements and will remain mobilized for the night, according to a police source.

“The Prefect assured me that everything will be done to determine the exact circumstances of this tragedy” which affected a Sevranais “father of a family” and plunged the inhabitants of his district “in shock”, declared in a press release Stéphane Blanchet , the mayor of Sevran. “As we wait and for everyone’s safety, it is essential that we remain calm,” he urged.
