Seguin before seeing Wolfsburg again: “I showed that I can play in the Bundesliga”

VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday (3:30 p.m.) at the newcomers Greuther Fürth – there is a reunion with ex-VfLern Luca Itter and Paul Seguin. And Seguin, the son of ex-GDR national player Wolfgang “Paule” Seguin, who found what he didn’t always get in Wolfsburg in Fürth: lasting appreciation, is particularly looking forward to that. “I’m a leading player in the team here,” said the ex-Wolfsburg happily.

There were quite a few who thought he had a great future at VfL. The 26-year-old made the big step into the Bundesliga at VfL, making his debut in April 2016 in a 2-0 draw with Wolfsburg against Augsburg. Although another 25 premier league games followed, he had not been able to fully assert himself at VfL. And so Seguin took the step to SpVgg in January 2019. He had a conversation with the SPORTBUZZER said: “I am now taking a step back so that I can take three steps forward. I have shown that I can play the Bundesliga.” If he now looks back at the two and a half years in Fürth, one has to realize that Seguin did everything right. “It wasn’t an easy step for me at the time, but I was convinced that I could return to the Bundesliga if I could play. We have built something great here, we’re back in the Bundesliga – and now we want to show that we can stay there. “

It wasn’t that he didn’t feel any appreciation in Wolfsburg, “maybe not in the end. But that was maybe a little bit my fault, but not only, ”says Seguin – and thinks of the many ups and downs that he experienced in Wolfsburg. After he did not get the match experience he wanted at VfL, he was loaned to Dresden. But at Dynamo he didn’t have to play in midfield, but in the back right. “Back then I often thought of the team and said: Okay, I’ll play in this position, but it’s actually not my forte. That robbed me of a lot of self-confidence back then. That was a wasted year. I’m already convinced that if I can play in midfield, I’m a good player. Now I’m happy to be back in the Bundesliga and to compete with the best, ”said Seguin.

At the Fürthern he is in the middle of the field. For many experts, the Kleeblatt Club is number 1. Seguin: “That was also the case last season in the second division, in the end we were promoted to the Bundesliga. But of course, one must not forget that our club is not as big as other clubs in terms of finances. ”In addition, top players like David Raum (1899 Hoffenheim), Anton Stach (Mainz 05) or Sebastian Ernst (Hannover 96) leave the club. “We also got good new players,” says Seguin, “but they have to be integrated. This can not be done overnight.”

While VfL travels to Fürth with three wins and as leaders of the table, the Fürth team only have one point in their books – and yet the ex-Wolfsburg is hoping for the first victory of this young season against his ex-club, of all places. “We play at home and can be a disgusting team if we bring what the coach wants from us on the pitch.” If the home three-point succeeds, it would be the first home win for Fürth in the Bundesliga ever. Seguin: “I’m really looking forward to this game, after all, I was in Wolfsburg for a long time. To play against VfL now – that’s something very special. “

Fürth isolates itself from the VfL game

With a draw (1: 1 against Bielefeld) and two defeats (1: 5 in Stuttgart, 0: 3 in Mainz) promoted Greuther Fürth started the Bundesliga season, on Saturday the clovers will host VfL. Before the duel with Wolfsburg, SpVgg coach Stefan Leitl wants to “try something new” and isolates his team. All training sessions this week will take place behind closed doors.

The coach doesn’t want to change anything about the system (Fürth last played 4-3-1-2). “We won’t put the team bus in the goal. In order to remain credible, you shouldn’t deviate from your philosophy right away, ”says Leitl. In addition, it is “not because of the way that we lose games”, but because of too many slight mistakes on the part of his team and that the individual quality of the opponents is greater. That will also be the case against VfL on Saturday. “We now have to become a team as quickly as possible,” says Leitl, describing his main task.
