On Tuesday, May 3, the opening of the exhibition ‘Light and Color’ by the Segovian painter and founder of the Taller de las Artes association, Manuel Serrano, will take place in the Municipal Market of La Albuera. It wants to be more than just another cultural event, it wants to be the first stone of an ambitious project to promote this place as an exhibition hall for local artists. The Caja Rural de Segovia Foundation has also joined this adventure and will encourage passers-by by placing a large poster outside the market.
Art can be enjoyed in many places, it can meet the viewer where they least expect it. Also in a covered market, where all kinds of products are purchased with a wide variety of commercial establishments. An activity as daily and daily as shopping does not have to be at odds with letting yourself be surprised by the art and culture on its walls.
Manuel Serrano collaborated with the merchants in the project they carried out last fall for the sale of donations of works of art with the aim of helping with the solidarity project ‘En La Palma de Nuestra Mano’, whose ultimate goal is to raise nearly 30,000 euros to build a playground on Isla Bonita, after the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano. Up to 30 paintings were hung.
As a result of that experience, Serrano has looked for a way to promote this space, which would be great for many artists to publicize their work. He found good harmony and total collaboration in the manager of the Caja Rural de Segovia Foundation, Beatriz Serrano, who is going to provide triptychs with exhibition works, in the advertising posters and with a poster that is located outside the market to attract attention of passers-by and let them come and see it.
It is about more than thirty works by Manuel Serrano, which he has not exhibited individually since 2013, when he was in the Torreón de Lozoya, will be the first touchstone, with the exhibition ‘Light and Color’, which can be visited until May 30. Precisely from the Torreón sample, it collects some works of great social importance on homeless people.
It also shows the copies he has made of paintings from the Prado Museum, with the original signature of Velázquez, Goya, Zurbarán or Tiziano. Manuel Serrano had a rather tense first meeting with the director of copies of the art gallery precisely because of a work by Titian, but since then they have maintained a good friendship.
The Segovian painter hopes to bring this project to a successful conclusion that will encourage other artists to use the Municipal Market of La Albuera as an exhibition hall. Starting in June, a member of the Taller de las Artes cultural association could take over this experience. Manuel Serrano combines the realization of his personal work with painting and drawing classes, from Monday to Friday, at the Taller de las Artes.
