Segob asks Canadian company and workers to negotiate to reopen mine in Cosalá

MEXICO._ Olga Sánchez Cordero Dávila, head of the Ministry of the Interior (Segob), asked this Wednesday the Canadian company Americas Gold and Silver and its workers to advance in the negotiations to reopen the San Rafael mine, located in Cosalá, Sinaloa , given the blockade that has existed for more than 14 months.

“Make a very respectful call to the courts that have these two amparo trials so that they could resolve as soon as possible and we in the negotiations have the certainty already about the resolution that they issue,” said the head of Segob.

During the presidential morning press conference, the federal official assured that Segob has served as a facilitator of dialogue in six mining conflicts and in San Rafael “there has been a timely follow-up.”

“Currently the parties are in talks about the terms of the reopening of the mine and the entry of the workers. Here we call on both the mining company and the workers to move forward in the various positions they have for the rehiring of a group of workers, so that we can now move forward with the reopening of the mine, ”said Sánchez Cordero Dávila.

So far, six appeals have been filed against a resolution of a federal court, which issued an award on April 7, 2021, in which the mining union is condemned for the distribution of 54 million dollars that involves 708 workers and 389 for the payment of the pending differences, specified the federal official.

According to the Canadian company, a group of extortionists allegedly linked to organized crime in the area, has blocked the mine, deceiving public opinion, by justifying this action by an alleged labor dispute between unions, which the mining company insists does not exist.

AMLO WARNS WITH REMOVING THE CONCESSION FROM MINING CANADIENSE, IF IT DOES NOT ACCEPT A NEW UNION

On March 17, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador warned that the federal government could remove the concession from the Canadian mining company Americas Gold and Silver, in Cosalá, Sinaloa, if it does not accept the Union that won title to the contract, just because it does not the company “likes” it.

“I explain to the Mexicans that the company does not accept the Union, so they were fighting over the ownership of the contract, because there is a bad habit, so it was also before the companies wanted to have unions as a way, white unions that were at the service of the companies and did not defend the workers, “said the national leader.

“So, in this case, as there were two unions fighting over the ownership of the contract, a recount was made and, by decision of the workers, a union to represent the workers was won, but since the company does not like it, they do not want to start. activities, because they want to have their union, “said the Tabasco politician.

”I take this opportunity to ask the Secretary of Foreign Relations [Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón] that he speak with the Government of Canada, and that he explain this situation and that it is not to be understood as a threat, not even as a warning, “added the head of the Federal Executive Power.

“But if the law is not respected, the Government can revoke the concession to the company and there will be another company that wants, complying with the law, to carry out the mining exploitation works,” said López Obrador, during his conference on morning press.

Likewise, the president also spoke out in the case of the mining company First Majestic Silver Corp, which, he said, refuses to pay taxes and is seeking to go to international courts, although, he trusted that with the help of the Canadian government an agreement will be reached .

“The company does not want to pay taxes and they are already seeking to go to international courts, because we have also called the Canadian authorities to help us and for these companies to do the same as they do in Canada, we do not want them to do more than that”, abounded.

“That they pay taxes, as they do in Canada, that they treat the workers well, and that they take care of the environment, that they do not destroy the territory. So, I am sure that an agreement will be reached in that sense and I am talking about two, but a hundred mining companies must be working, it is not general, it is a matter of some companies. Hopefully, the Government of Canada will help us to resolve this matter, otherwise we are going to act legally ”, he concluded.
