Sega Atlus released the latest information on its new game ‘Unicorn Overlord’ through the ‘TGS 2023 Media Briefing’ event today (20th). Unicorn Overlord is a new simulation RPG co-produced by Atlus and Vanillaware, and is also a title commemorating the 20th anniversary of the two companies, which have been producing games together for about 20 years since OdinSphere.
Atlus producer Akiyasu Yamamoto, who made the announcement that day, said that the previous work that is closest in concept to Unicorn Overlord is ‘Dragon’s Crown’. Dragon’s Crown is a title created with the intention of ‘What would it look like if the belt scroll genre game that dominated the arcade market in the 1980s was recreated in the 2010s?’ The new game Unicorn Overlord started with the idea of ’What would it look like if a simulation RPG that was popular in the 1990s was recreated in the 2020s?’
This was followed by an introduction to the main characters appearing in Unicorn Overlord. There are a total of six characters, including the main characters Alain, Scarlet, and Rex, the squires Joseph and Ilenia, and the archenemy Galerius whom the main character and his party face. Producer Yamamoto said that in addition to the six characters, more than 100 characters, including humans, elves, beastmen, and angels, will appear in the game, and more than 60 of them can become the player’s companion characters.

The player continues the adventure by traveling through a vast field and liberating the lands under Galerius’ occupation one by one. The feature is that you can freely explore all visible fields and create your own story along your own route. Director Takashi Noma explained that the order in which the 60 types of companions are acquired will be different for each, and that you can experience visuals reminiscent of games from the Super Famicom era and a free play experience that will make you feel excited just by walking around.
Next, the difficulty system and online battle mode were introduced. In Unicorn Overlord, the difficulty level that players can choose from is divided into three levels: Casual, Tactical, and Expert, and they can choose a play style that suits their taste. Users who want to focus on the charm of the characters and enjoy the story can choose Casual to enjoy the game without difficulty, while users who want to focus on the strategy of the simulation RPG can choose Expert to enjoy the tension of the battle content.
Online competitions are conducted by fighting against troops created by other players. Since this is a game where unit formation is more important than anything else, it can be said to be a way to show off and share the unit formation you created with others. Producer Yamamoto explained that online competition is only optional content and that it will have no effect on story play even if it is not played.
