In recent days, Israel carried out an airstrike on the southern districts of Beirut, which resulted in the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. Satellite photos from Planet showed the scale of destruction in the attacked area. In recent hours, Israel also launched a ground operation in Lebanon.

September 27 this year The Israeli army launched an attack on Hezbollah’s headquarters in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. A day later, Israeli army spokesman Avichai Adraee told the world that as a result of airstrikes Hasan Nasrallah, head of the Lebanese Shiite terrorist organization, was killed. The Israeli military used bunker-penetrating bombs targeting Hezbollah’s underground command center.

The destruction of the area was presented on satellite images from Planet. We can see that four buildings in the southern district of Dahieh were most damaged. The sounds of explosions were also heard in the city. According to the media, an entire quarter of buildings was destroyed and it was the largest airstrike on the Lebanese capital during the year-long escalation of the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel.

It is worth noting that the Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas announced that Israel’s killing of Lebanese Hezbollah leader Hasan Nasrallah will only strengthen the fight against that state. “The crimes and killings of the occupier will only strengthen the determination of the resistance movement in Palestine and Lebanon to continue on this path until victory and the overthrow of the occupation,” Hamas said in a statement.

However, the death of Nasrallah, who led Hezbollah for over three decades, is a significant blow to the organization. Nasrallah was born in 1960 in Beirut. He joined Hezbollah in the 1980s and was elected leader of the organization in 1992 after the organization’s previous secretary general died in an Israeli assassination attempt.

Hamas and other Palestinian terrorist groups invaded Israel on October 7, 2023, killing nearly 1,200 people and kidnapping 251. This started the war in the Gaza Strip that continues to this day, in which, according to local authorities controlled by Hamas, over 41,500 people died. Palestinians.

Since the outbreak of the war, Hezbollah, which controls the south of Lebanon, has been shelling the north of Israel, which is met with strong counterattacks. The group declares that it shows solidarity with Hamas and will stop firing if a truce is concluded in the Gaza Strip.

On the night of Monday to Tuesday (September 30 to October 1), the Israeli army launched limited and targeted ground operations against the targets of the terrorist Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. As reported, the targets are located in border villages and pose a direct threat to towns in the north of Israel. It was added that the actions of the land forces are supported by aviation and artillery, and the soldiers have been preparing for this operation in recent months.

The described events are again a good example showing how important a role satellites play, in this case imaging. Photographs taken by units in orbit are now an integral part of operational activities, as confirmed by the war in Ukraine and the conflict in the Middle East.

The information obtained in this way helps, among others: see where the enemy’s valuable equipment is located, how it is moved, and assess the effects of the attack. Soon we should also see satellite photos of Israel’s launched ground operation in Lebanon.
