“Seed of the Sacred Fig Tree” is in the running for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film on Germany. The nomination will be decided in January.

Mohammad Rasoulof’s (51) “The Seed of the Sacred Fig Tree” is the German candidate in the Oscar category “Best International Feature Film”. This was announced by German Films, the representative of German film on the international stage. According to a press release, the decision was made by a nine-member jury around actor and jury spokesman Ulrich Matthes (65) after viewing 13 submitted films.

A “masterfully directed and movingly acted film”

The jury’s statement states, among other things, that the film “subtly tells of the cracks within a family, which are representative of the cracks within Iranian society” and that it is a “masterfully directed and movingly acted film with scenes that remain in the memory”.

The director fled to Germany from Iran a few months ago. It is an “outstanding work” and we are “very happy to know that Rasoulof is safe in our country. And we are pleased that he will represent Germany at the Oscars in 2025.”

Rasoulof’s film premiered at this year’s Cannes International Film Festival, and the filmmaker was awarded the Special Jury Prize. According to the description by the German distributor Alamode, “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” is “an angry and blunt reckoning with the unjust regime in Iran, told as a brilliant, breathless political thriller and filled with authentic images of the protests in autumn 2022 that shook the country to its foundations”. The film is scheduled to be released in cinemas in Germany on December 26, 2024.

The schedule for the Oscars

The 97th Academy Awards will be presented on March 2, 2025 in Los Angeles. According to German Films, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is expected to publish a list of all titles submitted in the “Best International Feature Film” category at the beginning of November. A so-called shortlist with a total of 15 titles will then be published in mid-December. Five films will be selected from this shortlist and nominated for the Foreign Oscar. The decision will be announced in mid-January.
