Rachel Hazes (52) is happy that now everyone knows what her son André (28) has been through in the last year. As a result, she no longer has to keep up appearances for her. “I couldn’t and didn’t want to say anything,” Rachel tells Story.

Goosebumps from the phone call
“It’s his story, after all. On the other hand: I didn’t know any better at first. I really thought he had an emotional breakdown when he went to Spain. The first time was for five days and the second time was for a longer period of time. Then I also received that phone call from him which still gives me goosebumps thinking about it…”
Dependence
André called his mother to confess that he was addicted to alcohol and drugs and urgently needed help. «André said that he no longer had the meaning of life. That he couldn’t be happier. I found it so intense. It’s very bad when you hear your child say: I don’t want to live anymore. This is the worst thing you can hear as a mother.
To trust
We both cried then. That was also the first time I heard André cry. He has always held out. He couldn’t do it anymore. He still saddens me when I think back to that moment.’ Rachel didn’t know André was addicted. “I always thought he had to use something. Due to workload and energy required. People used to tell me that too. But when I then confronted André about it, he said: how did you get there? I really don’t want to be a naive mother, but we have always been a family where anything could be discussed. And then I believe my son if he denies it ».
